Canon got it right on International Women's Day

"For International Women's Day, Canon..." as I read the subject line of the email, I cringe at the possible endings to that sentence. Not outside the realm of possibilities is something like, "Releases Commemorative Pink Camera Strap!" In 2018 I think we're better than that. Probably. I keep reading. "...Lends Support to 'Women Photograph'" is how it ends, and I feel a real sense of relief. This was an organization I knew and had covered in the past. It aims to 'elevate the voices of female visual journalists,' offering an additional resource for editors as well as grants and workshops for female photographers. I read on. "Canon will work with Women Photograph to aid their travel grant program which funds female and non-binary photographers to attend workshops, hostile environment trainings, festivals, and other developmental opportunities." If you're a brand looking to grab a slice of the #MeToo pie, you could definitely do much worse than this. Case in point: McDonald's put on a master class this year in getting it wrong. The fast food giant announced that it would be turning its logo upside down to recognize International Women's Day... a "W" instead of an "M"... for women... get it? Critics spoke up quickly, pointing out that it felt like an empty gesture coming from a company that can afford to do much more. The upside down arches were on my mind when I started reading that press release from Canon this morning, so it felt very reassuring to see the brand pledging real support behind an effort created by, and created for, women photographers. Sure, it's all marketing at the end of the day, and I truly hope Canon's support of Women Photograph doesn't begin and end with a one-time workshop. Issuing a press release is cheap. Following through, and staying committed in the long term isn't. But if you're going to talk about supporting women on International Women's Day, please don't just give us an empowering logo and a T-shirt. Instead, put your money where your mouth is.

The Good The iPhone 8 offers wireless charging, lightning-fast performance and small but solid upgrades to its camera, screen and speakers. Its starting storage size is a roomy 64GB, double that of the iPhone 7. The Bad This phone has the same pedestrian design, missing headphone jack and battery life as the iPhone 7 -- and no dual camera either. The iPhone 8 costs a bit more than baseline new iPhones in years past, and comes only in black, silver and a new shade of gold. The Bottom Line The sensible, speedy iPhone 8 makes a nice upgrade to the iPhone 6S and earlier siblings, but we won't know until November how it compares to the much pricier iPhone X. On Nov. 3, Apple will roll out its seductive sports car of a phone: the all-new, totally redesigned, edgy, giant-screened iPhone X. So why buy an iPhone 8 when that sexy iPhone X is just around the corner? The 8 is last year's design with this year's technology. It feels familiar. It's a safe pick. It's a "let's not spend a thousand dollars on an iPhone" iPhone. It's a "Touch ID and a home button matter more to me than a leap of faith into the world of Face ID" iPhone. Make no mistake: The iPhone 8 is essentially the "iPhone 7S." Apple saved the cool features and radical new design for the iPhone X, which costs 43 percent more -- $999, £999 or AU$1,579 to start. And if you want the truly impressive dual camera, with portrait mode and 2x optical zoom -- both seriously nice step-ups -- you'll need to invest in the much larger iPhone 8 Plus ($981.00 at Amazon.com), or wait for that eventual X. It's a different approach than Samsung, which made its whole line of Galaxy S8 and Note 8 phones look new, but not too dissimilar from Google's take on the Pixel 2 phones. With the iPhone, new looks only come at the top end. That X is tempting indeed, but my only real-world experience with the device is the brief time I spent with it at Apple's Sept. 12 launch event. Until I can eventually get one and put it through its paces, I strongly recommend that you refrain from buying any phone whatsoever. But if you need a phone right now, or if you have no desire to pay the iPhone X premium, let's talk practical considerations. The iPhone 8's best feature is its processor, a fast new six-core A11 Bionic chip, similar to the processor in the iPhone X and 8 Plus. Thanks to an all-new image sensor, photo quality has improved in low light, as has video quality. The iPhone 8 adds an improved iPad-style True Tone screen, and the speakers sound nice and loud. All the new iPhones include wireless charging now, thanks to a glass back. If you have an iPhone 7, you'll find the faster speed, better screen and better camera on the iPhone 8 "nice to have," but short of "must-buy" territory -- unless you're particularly enamored with the wireless charging Android owners have enjoyed for years. For anyone with an iPhone 6S ($595.00 at Amazon.com) or previous model, however, the benefits of jumping to an iPhone 8 ramp up dramatically. The speed, screen, audio and camera improvements will feel significant, and you'll get nice upgrades you missed when you skipped the iPhone 7, including water resistance. So, yeah: That iPhone X may look great in the showroom window. But ultimately, you're driving off the lot with the practical four-door crossover. It's more affordable. It gets perfectly decent gas mileage. But it still has the same nice high-end navigation package, entertainment system and fuel-injected engine as that sweet low-slung coupe. Not too shabby. That's the iPhone 8. The baseline 2017 iPhone remains a top-tier smartphone -- a seriously good phone. Just don't expect it to turn heads.

Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 First Impressions Review

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 is a rangefinder-style Micro Four Thirds camera whose most recognizable feature is its tilting electronic viewfinder. The GX9 provides a healthy serving of new features and performance improvements over its predecessor, the GX8. The most notable changes include the removal of the low-pass filter on the GX9's 20MP sensor, 5-axis in-body image stabilization (up from 4-axis), slightly faster burst shooting and Bluetooth connectivity. The shutter unit has also been redesigned, with Panasonic claiming a 90% reduction in 'shutter shock' compared to the GX8. There's also a built-in flash - something the GX8 lacked - as well as some tweaks to image processing. Panasonic appears to have rearranged their lineup a bit, with the GX9 serving more as a midrange model than its predecessors, sitting alongside the DSLR-style DMC-G85. The price has come down to $999 with a kit lens, compared to $1199 for the GX8's body alone. Alongside the price drop, some features found on the GX8 are now gone, such as weather-sealing. The EVF is smaller and battery life has dropped by about 25%, as well. The GX9's closest peers are the Fujifilm X-E3 and Sony's a6300, both of which have 24MP APS-C sensors, hybrid autofocus systems (which the GX9 lacks) and 4K video capture. You can see that the differences between the GX9 and GX8 are a mixed bag. The GX9 loses the low-pass filter, get an extra axis (rotation) of image stabilization and adds Bluetooth and a flash. However, its viewfinder is smaller, body no longer weather-sealed and battery life has taken a turn for the worse. Speaking of viewfinders, Panasonic has gone back to a field sequential panel (a different technology than traditional LCD or OLED,) which some people may find distracting due to 'color tearing'. The LCD is now tilting versus fully articulating, which some people may find as an upgrade, and others will not. The 20MP Live MOS sensor on the GX8 is as high resolution as you'll find on a Micro Four Thirds camera, though larger APS-C sensors perform a bit better at high sensitivities. Both the X-E3 and a6300 have hybrid (contrast + phase detect) autofocus systems, though Panasonic's DFD system has performed quite well despite lacking phase-detection. The GX8 has higher resolution LCDs and an EVF that's quite a bit bigger than the X-E3's. Both the X-E3 and a6300 have faster burst rates and 35% higher battery life.

Fanny packs, belt bags, bum bags, hip bags — whatever name least offends, their time has come. We could say the trend dates back to Pre-Fall 2016 when Alexander Wang, fashion’s resident club kid, presented rave-ready, slouchy, at times pony hair-embellished fanny packs (worn as shoulder bags or carried across the chest, thus avoiding any dazed tourist comparisons). Belt bags also turned up at Spring 2016’s Chanel Haute Couture show, where thin, double-wrapped, metallic iterations hung from the waists of Gigi Hadid, Lindsey Wixson and more. But that’s not the first we’ve seen of the hands-free accessory. Goldie Hawn favored the style in the 80s. Nineties moms couldn’t resist the fanny pack’s allure of convenience. Then there was that time Carrie Bradshaw wore a Gucci belt bag as she called out then-boyfriend Aidan on his passive-aggressive BS. While Karl Lagerfeld, Wang and SJP definitely helped get the hip bag where it is today, the recent conflation of various movements — athleisure, tiny bags, utilitarianism, gender-neutral dressing, individualism by way of hard-to-find vintage pieces — has made the style an absolute must-have. This year’s hip huggers come embellished with fringe and outsize hardware. Rather than cheap (neon) polyester, designers craft satin, suede and leather versions. It started with the Resort 2017 collections with brands like Gucci, MSGM and Chanel making it clear that there’s nothing wrong with openly declaring just who you’re wearing. The theme continued with the Spring 2017 offerings as Christian Dior brazenly printed its name on exposed straps and exposed underwear (other fashion houses like Versace opted to confine self-promotion to less revealing items). Dior kept the logo train on track by plastering its recent Pre-Fall 2017 collection with tons of personal references, from punchy ponchos to bags boasting slide-through grips emblazoned with gold lettering. And we even saw logos popping up on both the runways of the Fall 2017 menswear shows and on attendees. As per usual, select street style stars seemed to be ahead of the trend as quite a few were captured going to and from the Spring 2017 shows decked out in name-brand insignias from Gucci, Balenciaga, Supreme, Moschino and more. Celebs have also been going loco for logos in recent months. Kendall Jenner turned heads at a recent Lakers game when she showed up courtside in a Dior Addict tee. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jennifer Aniston and Dakota Johnson have all been spotted keeping their pants up with Gucci’s now infamous double G belt. And fashion insiders like Veronika Heilbrunner demonstrated how to score by transforming a classic logo-clad topper into the epitome of athleisure goals.

This of course is probably true for normal shoppers, (though may not be for bulk buyers such as restaurants, hotels, pubs or other caterers - who will shop for single product bargains). However, we put an index of search terms together made up of all food stuffs and recipe ideas - it came to over 10m searches a month. Surely the supermarkets should be vying for that? It seems that some of the supermarkets are optimising for many, many food terms, and others are not. Cause or correlation, but the ones that are placed for multiple food terms and recipes are the ones that are doing best online - i.e Tesco. Why does Tesco have 50% of the online grocery market? In terms of organic search, that is being found in Google’s search results, Tesco is extremely dominant. I've created category specific indexes based on major search terms across the grocery sector eg frozen foods, online shopping, recipe ideas etc. The returning URLs for these keywords in Google’s search results are being tracked every day. As with the industry as a whole, Tesco is light-years ahead of the competition and it is no surprise that it has 50% of the ecommerce grocery market and is doing so well in the online shopping channel as its search positions dominate the sector. The example indexes are: General supermarket (search terms include: online shopping, groceries etc). Mother and baby goods (baby milk, nappies etc). Fresh food and recipes (fresh pasta, fresh fruit, recipe ideas etc). Food cupboard (large marmite, pancake mix etc). Within these groups are around 2,500 search terms with a monthly search traffic, according to Google, of over 10m in the UK. This data indicates that Tesco is by far the most visible supermarket. In fact all the other major supermarket brands hardly feature at all outside the general supermarket indexes. (all data from Pi Datametrics).

Tesco is the clear winner in the online grocery market, in fact it takes almost 50p of every £1 spent on food shopping on the internet. This virtual monopoly is set to continue not just because of spending on fulfilment, dark stores, distribution, stock and offline marketing but due to its online visibility through organic search and a very visible well-structured website. Last week Graham Charlton of Econsultancy asked "are supermarkets missing out on SEO opportunities?" Yes is the easy answer for most, but across all food-stuff searches Tesco really is bucking the trend and hoovering up 50% of all online grocery spend. But is Tesco really good or are the others really bad? What is the the online grocery market worth? Over 94% of all groceries are bought in bricks and mortar stores. For any other statistic like that there would be little fuss or even attention for the other 5-6%. However, the online grocery sector equates to £5.6bn (compared with the whole of the grocery market being worth £157bn). In terms of revenue, there is serious land grabbing to be had. The online share of the grocery market is minuscule compared to other sectors within retail. Books, DVDs and music have long performed well online, perhaps partly due to the Amazon effect, and the relatively low brand loyalty to the store when purchasing such products. For music and videos we purchase 80% of goods online as opposed to offline. The whole of online retail averages 11.7% of all sales in the UK.

The things you generally don't want to trust a delivery service with until you get to know them are the types of products that require a subjective judge of quality before they go into your cart. Most delivery services keep their own stock separate from the grocery stores they partner with, and they only keep as much stock as they need for their deliveries. Even though their products are turned over and rotated more often than your supermarket shelves probably are, there are a few things you may want more personal control over. Meat, deli meats, fish, seafood. Unpackaged produce. Some dairy products (eggs, gourmet cheese). Perishable products and goods where you're not quite comfortable letting a stranger choose for you should stay off of your online shopping list until you're ready to test those waters. After all, there's no faster way to make sure you never order from a grocery delivery service than to order apples only to receive bruised, spotty fruit that you wouldn't have chosen had you actually gone to the store. The same applies for meat and seafood: if you're picky about the size and weight of the meat you buy, or how thickly your deli meats are sliced, you may have trouble giving up that control to an order picker who's responsible for filling a box with your order and putting it on the truck for delivery. We're not saying you should never order these products from grocery delivery services. What we are saying is that you should probably hold off on them until you grow to know your delivery person, trust your delivery service, and fully understand your options to return products you're not happy with. In some cases, you may have to head into a grocery store to process an exchange. In other cases, you can just decline to accept that part of your order, and your delivery person will handle the exchange for you. Still, if you know you'll never be happy unless you're the one squeezing the tomatoes in the produce section or you're a big fan of your local farmer's market or health food store, save the produce for a quick, personal trip, or beg a friend, neighbor, or family member to visit the store and choose wisely on your behalf. If the reason you're shopping for groceries online is because you'd rather put your time to better use, consider hiring a runner using a service like previously mentioned Fiverr to do the job for you.

Probably a little late to give a “send-off” to this year’s class, but I wanted to write something that I wish someone had told me in the beginning. I can say that my second half of the hike was a lot more fun than the first half. Not going into town as often and not finding people that I really connected with. Do your best to find that early. Having this discussion with a fellow thru-hiker Lightning, we came to the conclusion that the thing we missed the most was the people. The kind of motivated, stubborn, people with a mission are hard to come by in the workplace. Getting a group of people together with a single mission, that won’t let the others fail, is not found in a lot of places. Remember as you press on, that all your experiences out there are better shared. Each summit, every weird trail town, all the beers, are improved by having fellow hikers around. Shared suffering and the shared joys are what made this hike so special.

Learning to Love Again

When I began the trail, I knew that I would miss the regular physical contact that I had with people in sedentary life. Everything from high fives, fist bumps, hugs, and handshakes – I would miss it all. Little did I know how strange and how hard it would be to feel love without that simple physical contact. Disclaimer – you might want to read up on the 5 love languages if you’re slightly confused about what I am talking about. A simple Google search should suffice. While on trail, besides ticks and bears, the thing that hikers fear most is Norovirus – imagine having a stomach bug for three days and not being able to eat anything while losing it all. Being a virus, it is spread through human contact with anyone or anything that is infected or has come into contact with it. For this reason, among others, you don’t shake hands, high five, fist bump, give hugs, and you make sure to actively avoid contact if possible. Being someone who feels love through those simple interactions, it was so strange for me to not shake people’s hands when I met them or to congratulate people with hugs or high fives. It felt was as though I was being isolated from people even though I was in close proximity with them every day. The good news is that physical contact isn’t the only love language. I found myself trying to love others and to be loved in ways that were not my primary languages. Whenever someone did trail magic, not only did I feel overjoyed, but there was a deeper sense of appreciation and gratitude that made me feel cared for and loved. If someone threw my bear line for me, I would feel the same thing – something deeper than service and gifts. I see how the other love languages are more active in my life and think about how the trail isn’t just teaching my legs how to do big miles, or my brain to spend time in silence and though, but that it is changing me. It is changing the way that I can be loved and how I can adapt to be loved in almost every situation. As someone wise once wrote, “these three remain – faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love”.

At last some pics made on fresh air! Like I said today to one of my brothers: I like winter (snow and cold …) till end of December, in January I tolerate this, but in February I dream about spring. My dreams come true cause it’s sunny and warm and it seems to stay like that till march or even longer (so they say in weather forecasts) :D. Lately I’m really fond of my new eyes sweatshirt, which I bought cheap and it’s similar to those from Kenzo! It work great with so many clothes.

Personal style bloggers sometimes get a bad rap -- caricatured as pretty, brainless girls who dress up for their camera-wielding boyfriends and post their results to a WordPress blog. But over the past decade, these independent publishers have become a real force in the fashion industry -- not just snapping up front row seats at fashion shows, but landing major campaigns and collaborations with brands, becoming regular guests on TV shows like "Today" and "America's Next Top Model," and turning their blogs into multimillion-dollar businesses. Some have become household names.

Continuing in our annual-ish tradition, today we're releasing our 2015 ranking of the most influential personal style bloggers in the world. This list looks wildly different than it did in 2013. Here's why. For one, we excluded every blogger who has expanded her empire to the point that the blog is no longer only about her. (Leandra Medine, Garance Dore and Emily Weiss fall into this category.) We also chose to focus on those who write more about personal style than anything else. (That means leaving out lifestyle and photography bloggers.) We took more international bloggers into consideration, since the Internet is global and all. And we narrowed it down to blogs that cover womenswear more regularly than menswear.

Why did we change it up? Because the role of #influencers is changing, and we felt like this list is a better representation of what's happening within a particular niche of celebrity.

To determine the ranking, we considered:

Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest followers, as well as website traffic. These numbers gave us a snapshot of how many people these bloggers are reaching every day.
Brand extensions. We gave props to bloggers who have used their influence to create original products.
It factor. We talked to industry insiders about whom advertisers are loving right now, and who is moving the most products via affiliate links.
Google News searches. Headline makers were rewarded for extending their reach beyond their own network.

After crunching the numbers -- really, numbers were crunched, via Excel -- we were rewarded with this list:
